What is your current role at BNP Paribas Asset Management (BNPP AM)?

I AM A PURE
BNP Paribas PRODUCT

I am a pure BNP Paribas product, having spent my entire career in the Group; from the beginning in Germany in 1997, to the General Inspection department - which enabled me to discover the BNP Paribas Group and all its components - then to asset management in 2006, where I am today.
As a member of the BNPP AM Executive Committee, my role encompasses three dimensions. Firstly, upstream, the product, i.e. getting closer to the societal and anthropological issues, understanding the needs of clients and seeing what it implies in terms of development, savings and investment. Then, everything that has to do with digital, data and innovation. And finally, quantitative research, which nourishes the other aspects: in short, putting in place all the ingredients to satisfy the new needs of our clients and prepare for those of tomorrow. These three dimensions are linked by the same strategic desire to focus on sustainability and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) issues.

How are you moving towards this sustainable investment goal on a daily basis?

OUR SUSTAINABLE
MOMENTUM IS
THE RESULT OF
MORE THAN 20 YEARS
OF COMMITMENT

Of course, environmental issues and the social dimension of investment are themes to which I am particularly attentive. However, I had not heard of sustainable investment before I joined BNPP AM. I discovered a passionate and inspiring team, involved in socially responsible investment management, which immediately captivated me. For years, I watched the team develop and grow. When I joined the Executive Committee, I worked to structure the strategic direction and to sponsor the program associated with the acceleration of sustainability issues. Since then, our Sustainability Centre1 has grown stronger and sustainability runs through our firm. This sustainable momentum is ultimately the result of a commitment of more than twenty years. It has gradually transformed our entire business: research, investment, marketing, product development, communication, human resources, technology, risk, legal, operations, etc. Today, our corporate philosophy is truly to generate long-term sustainable returns for our clients.

How does BNPP AM differentiate itself from its competitors in this respect?

WE ARE NUMBER 1
IN FRANCE AND BELGIUM
IN TERMS OF ASSETS
UNDER MANAGEMENT
IN LABELLED FUNDS

We have to remain humble as we are in a dynamic and ever-changing world. Nevertheless, we can rely on simple and concrete indicators such as the labels of sustainable funds. For example, we are number 1 in France and Belgium in terms of assets under management in labelled funds2. We are also the leading manager of sustainable thematic funds. These recognitions are the emerging facets of our leadership in sustainable investment, which is anchored at the heart of all our areas of expertise. Our analysis is based on the development of a proprietary ESG scoring system for an investment universe of over 12,000 issuers. We are fortunate to be part of the BNP Paribas Group that is a forerunner in its commitment to sustainable finance, whose raison d'être is to have a positive impact on society and its clients.

What are the next steps to maintaining this commitment?

For our clients and regulators alike, sustainability is now a top priority. Our objective must be to continue to innovate in such a way as to consolidate our lead in sustainable themes, those which directly finance economic players that find solutions to environmental and social issues. Our ambition is to provide investors with concrete information so that they know exactly what impact their savings are having and what prospects they can expect. Let's take the example of financing the energy sector, which is vital to the sustainability issue. We have completely changed our traditional sector investment strategy, which was losing momentum at the time, to an innovative strategy financing the key players in the energy transition. Investors have largely followed us in this approach: in just over a year, the fund's assets have risen from 120 million euros to 3.3 billion euros at the end of February 2021.

Is working at BNPP AM a source of pride?

Yes, BNPP AM is the asset manager of BNP Paribas. For me, BNP Paribas is the firm which, through its values and resilience, has shown just how important it can be in the financial world. Working for a leader is a source of pride, motivation and excellence.
